Photography inspiration and appreciation Great photographic works, past and present Photography inspiration from some of the great photographers and film makers influencing our creative world today. Rarindra Prakarsa People of Jakarta. The lighting, tone and sense of atmosphere in his images are cinematic but they are rural scenes of everyday life. He takes the mundane to the extraordinary   Rarinda says of himself: “I am an ordinary man who live in Jakarta. I like taking photo of people. Ordinary people around me.” He is inspired himself by Water Spies, a german born artist who lived in Bali until 1940 when he was arrested as an enemy alien and subsequently died aboard a prisoner of war ship. you can see many similarities in their work. You can see more of his work on and think you’ll agree, his work is far from ordinary. ____________________________________________ Shake By Carli Davidson Carli Davidson captures dogs in full motion of their shake resulting in hilarious and unusual expressions and drool slinging. Boudoir Shoots. Are they worth the paper they are printed on?
What’s it all about? A boudoir shoot starts with a usually somewhat anxious woman arriving at the studio with an armload of small clothes and a touch of what the hell am I doing here gleaming in her eye. We go through her clothing options and ideas and then she is taken to the make up chair for about an hour to have her hair and make up done by a pro. They then dress or undress according to their level of comfort. Boudoir is synonymous with the bedroom, but to me, it can be all types of beauty imagery. We can use sexy lingerie or big tulle skirts and corsets. It’s not about what you wear but how it makes you feel. I sometimes use swirling fabric, bed linen or flowers to play with revealing and concealing. It can be sensual, naughty, glamorous or playful but it’s always fun. Who is it for? I’ve been asked if these shoots for women or their men. These shoots are empowering for women, they encourage affirmation of their sexuality in a society built on repression. They are fun and confidence boosting and their men certainly benefit from that. I think the experience of the shoot is […]

Behind the Scenes of Commercial Fashion Imagery
Behind the Scenes of Commercial Fashion Imagery When Nichola talked with me about making imagery for her Shrawls, we knew from the outset that they would have to be dynamic and vivacious as she is an actress and each piece she makes is created along her journeys as she becomes different characters for theatre and film. She knits at auditions, in rehearsal rooms, on movie sets and sometimes another famous actor will have knit a line or two in a Shrawl! Each of her creations has had an exciting life before it is even finished. We wanted to bring this energy to her images and agreed that Marketa Formanova was the perfect person to be the face & spirit of the images. Marketa is a professional dancer and is the kind of person that comes into a room with a whirl of happy energy and enthusiasm. Within seconds you realise that everyone’s smiles are bigger and brighter and then she starts to dance. . . We talked about the mood and direction and created powerful tribal dance movements, then we went with some cheeky jazz and a classical piano piece. She was 20 different characters in the space of seconds as she whirled, spun […]

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Today’s work: A capture of The Ellusive Wallflower Tribe   Inspired by “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” with quotes like “we accept the love we think we deserve. .” and “in that moment I swear we were infinite” I used blue as it’s a receding colour like the wallflowers description: “You see things, you keep quiet about them and you understand”. I love the way the patterning around her eye looks almost like tribal marking and her expression is tranquil yet slightly guarded as she looks out at the world.
Bedtime stories and Bonfires
I think all parents should tell their children bedtime stories so when they sit at a bonfire, in their minds, they see things like this. “There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million.” – Walt Streightiff
